Service Learning

Volunteering with EmpowerAllVA was a powerful service-learning experience that showed me the impact of applying human services concepts in real-world settings. Service learning is vital in my field because it connects academic knowledge with community needs, ensuring we learn to make a meaningful difference. My work involved addressing housing insecurities, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones, and tackling coal dust pollution with Councilwoman Tina Vick. I even advocated for renters' rights at the General Assembly in Richmond, which deepened my understanding of public policy’s role in improving lives. A pivotal learning moment was standing up for community members at the General Assembly, realizing the importance of giving a voice to those in need. This experience taught me resilience and the value of partnership in creating change. I strengthened my advocacy, collaboration, and community engagement skills—skills that I’m committed to carrying forward in my career to bring about positive change.
