Diversity

My Social Inequality 320 course was essential for developing cultural awareness, a crucial skill in human services. Understanding diversity helps us approach each individual with respect and sensitivity in this field, especially given the many social inequalities people face. This course, required for my major, covered topics like systemic discrimination, intersectionality, and socioeconomic disparities, highlighting how race, gender, and class affect access to resources and opportunities. One impactful project allowed me to explore healthcare disparities in African American communities, which deepened my understanding of how social factors create barriers to quality care. A key takeaway was the importance of not only empathy but also advocacy for systemic change. I learned to confront uncomfortable truths about inequality and to address my own biases. This course sharpened my critical thinking skills and showed me the value of culturally competent communication. Moving forward, I’ll apply these insights by treating each client with greater cultural sensitivity and by advocating for equitable access to resources in my work.
