My internship with Good Steward BBC was invaluable, bridging classroom learning with real-world experience. Applied work-based learning is essential in human services because it allows us to interact directly with the communities we aim to serve, making theoretical concepts practical. During my internship, I worked with individuals nearing the end of their TANF benefits, conducting intake interviews, assessing needs, and connecting clients to essential resources. This hands-on experience refined my case management, communication, and resource navigation skills—core competencies in our field. One powerful moment came when I saw the immediate impact of securing resources like housing or job training for a client, reinforcing our role in community support. Challenges like navigating limited resources taught me resilience and patience, showing me the importance of balancing empathy with efficiency. I learned that my strengths lie in empathy and resourcefulness, while I need to improve my time management to handle multiple cases better. This internship was a crucial step in my professional journey. It equipped me to serve clients effectively and compassionately and underscored the value of work-based learning in preparing me to make a meaningful impact in human services.
