LeADERS, or Learning through Active Discovery, Engagement, Reflection, and Showcase, is a unique program at Old Dominion University. It brings the college experience to life by involving students in real-world issues they’re passionate about. It’s not just about learning from books; it’s about diving into meaningful projects and opportunities that let us grow as leaders, advocates, and community members. For me, joining LeADERS was a no-brainer. I wanted a college experience where I could build knowledge and take action to make a difference. Through LeADERS, I’ve been able to do just that, especially in areas close to my heart, like helping underserved populations and advocating for change. It’s been a way for me to bridge my studies with a real impact on the community.

Being part of LeADERS has helped me see how all my college experiences are interconnected rather than just a list of activities. Working with people facing challenging situations, like housing instability, has shown me the real-world power of empathy and effective communication. Each experience wasn’t just about learning something new; it was about using that knowledge to advocate for others, stand up for those who need a voice, and make a positive difference. Every experience—from working hands-on with individuals in need to collaborating with community organizations—has reinforced my belief that effective leadership isn’t just about guiding people; it’s about fighting for them when they can’t fight for themselves. It’s about seeing where help is needed, stepping up, and not stopping until real change happens. These experiences have taught me how crucial it is to stay resilient, adaptable, and committed to the cause. In human services, you often face challenges that require creative solutions and an unbreakable spirit. The skills I’ve developed in LeADERS, like assertive communication and problem-solving, are precisely what I’ll need as I step into a career focused on supporting vulnerable populations.
